Saving on My Prescriptions

A few weeks back I had told you that I saved on my prescriptions. I didn't have my vicodin prescription filled because I had keep the one from August when I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled. When I had the one pulled a few weeks back, I used my old but still good prescription. Last week when I had my root canal done, I didn't have the vicodin prescription filled because I still had pills left. I did have to have my Motrin 600mg filled. Since I'm unemployed and don't have health/prescription insurance coverage, I started calling around checking prices. I had the transfer coupon for Walgreens so I called there. It was $11.99 to fill my prescription but the FREE gift card was only for transferred prescriptions. I didn't have any other prescription coupons. So I headed to Meijer...

Did you know that Meijer accepts competitor prescription coupons? They sure do; however, they don't give you the face value of your coupon. They give you $10 off coupon for your next prescription and $10 off your next shopping trip. I probably won't use the $10 off prescription coupon since I rarely have prescription filled and it expires on 4/9/09. If I did, they would give me another $10 off prescription coupon when I had my next prescription filled. In all, you get a $10 off shopping trip and 2 - $10 off prescription coupon (only get the second one if you use the first). Meijer was $5 cheaper on the prescription as well. I paid $6.99 out of pocket and got those coupons. So, I actually "made" money - $3.01! Don't forget that Meijer has several free antibiotics too.

Speaking of prescription coupons:

There was one prescription coupon in yesterday's paper. It's for Target. FREE $10 gift card with any new or transferred prescription purchase. Expires 3/23/09.

The prescription coupon for Walgreens is still valid. It's for a $25 gift card on a transferred (only) prescription. It expires on 4/26/09.

Stamp Prices on the Rise!

The post office will get an extra 2 cents when you mail a letter starting May 11, 2009. The price of the first-class stamp will go up to $.44.

If you are planning on a mass mailing like wedding invitations or you use a lot of stamps, I would stock up on the Forever Stamps. They will continue
to sell at the current 42-cent rate until the increase occurs. They will remain valid in the future regardless of rate hikes.

Saving On Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I thought I would post on ways you can enjoy it without breaking the bank.

Gift Ideas
For significant other:
Many stores have sales this week on their Valentine's Day chocolates and stuffed animals. CVS has Kodak Movie DVDs on sale this week for $9.99 (save $5.00 on printable coupon from coupons.com) - you could always put one of those together with pictures from past to present. If you want to stay clear of store bought items, why not bake brownies, cookies, or a cake? You could always head to the Dollar Tree to pick up a nice tin to put them in. Then add in some creative gift cards redeemable for a free massage, car cleaning, special homemade breakfast, cuddle time... As for the card, make it yourself or head to the dollar store where you can get 2 for $1.

For kids, how about a book, movie or even gift cards redeemable to you? You could also do the above-mentioned things.

Stay In
Save money by making your favorite restaurant meal at home by candle light. After dinner, enjoy a movie on the cheap - Redbox $1 rental (check the codes before heading out - it might end up being free)or visit your library for free movie rentals. You could always pull out board games or cards.

Going Out
If you are heading out to dinner on Valentine's Day, check to see if a restaurant that you like or the one you are going to has gift certificates listed on Restaurant.com. You can get a $25 gift certificate for just $4...you can print them, you don't have to wait for them to be mailed.

Also, check to see if the restaurant you are heading out to had a newsletter or club to sign up for. They usually will send a free appetizer or dessert coupon. Like this coupon to Friday's for a BOGO entree (this one can't be used on Valentine's day though). Save on dessert by splitting one, head out to a bakery/ice cream shop for dessert or make your own at home.

Check your Entertainment Book. If the restaurant is in there but the coupon isn't valid on Saturday nights and you are in need of a sitter, why not go out a different night and switch off babysitting with a friend.

Babysitter
If you have younger kids at home and want to spend the evening out, you will need to find a babysitter. What about a family member or a friend? Maybe offer to do something for them or watch their kids. Does a friend have a teenager that would like to make a few extra bucks? Check with your local YMCA too. Our YMCA is offering a Parents' Night Out on Saturday.

Flowers
Forget about flowers.

Breakfast
If you are planning on going out without the kids, why not make breakfast for the kids? Heart shaped pancakes and sausage. You could also use food coloring on the pancakes to make them pink or red.

Save Yourself - Earn $100

I've posted about this before but I wanted to post it again since they changed the expiration day to December 31, 2009.

Suze Orman has teamed up with Ameritrade to bring you the Save Yourself Plan - follow Suze's Save Yourself Plan and Ameritrade will give you $100!

How's it work? You open an account and agree to have $100 dollars per month deposited to your New Ameritrade account for 12 months (first $100 must be deposited within 30 days of opening the account), when the 12th month's deposit is made they will deposit $100 dollars into your account. That's $100 on top of the money you have saved and the interest you have earned. If you have to withdraw the money early you still get the interest, you just lose out on the $100 dollars . Visit
this website for more information and to sign up. Offer expires December 31, 2009!

Let me tell you - I signed up for this offer back in March 2008 (before it expired last time). I have money saved that I would have blown had I had regular access to it at the local bank. I am over halfway to the $100 bonus from Ameritrade - just two more months!

Note: Last time they asked for a code. If you need the code still, it's 701.

My Shopping Trip - Week of 12/7/2008

This week there wasn't anything that we needed from the grocery. With my fiance out of town, I don't cook a lot of food so our grocery trip for January may be delayed a week or so. I did hit the drug stores though for a few items we needed.

Rite Aid
I hit this store early in the week to score some free cat food since we took in Momma and her 2 kittens (want a kitten?). I picked up the M&Ms and Hershey Kisses for the M&M Pretzel treats that were requested for the kids' Christmas parties at school and preschool on Friday. **One bag of Kitten Chow and one bag of Hershey Kisses missing from photo.**

I'll actually be stopping in again tomorrow when we drive past Rite Aid for more free Kitten/Cat food and LifeSavers! I'll update this on Monday since I will be spending the weekend with my fiance not the blogosphere.
Total OOP: $7.88 -- $31.84 (81%) Plus there is a $1 SCR on the M&Ms.

CVS
I had two rain checks from a few weeks back. Since I haven't really been to CVS except for quick stops, I finally got my items picked up. I'm hoping this is the last purchase of pull ups (fingers are crossed)! I was missing my $15 ECB when I got to the register (I thought it fell behind the counter but the cashier said she didn't see it)...UGH!!
Total OOP: $33.04 -- Earned $30.59 in ECB. ($12 Loreal, $12 St. Ives, $5 Huggies, $1.59 Powerade) - Now I can go buy lots of stuff even though our stockpile is FULL!

Walgreens
I didn't "need" laundry detergent but since ALL is my favorite I wanted to make sure I grabbed a few. I used my free coupon from VocalPoint for the Crest Weekly Clean. Then a few stocking stuffers for the kiddos.
Total OOP: $8.12

My Shopping Trip - Week of 11/30/08

This week's trip included my monthly grocery shopping stop. This month we raised our grocery budget (even though I only spent $4.37 more than last month's grocery store trip) since my kids will be out of school for two weeks at the end of the month and my fiance has some time off. We want to avoid ordering out and/or going out for dinner, if possible. Plus, living in Ohio you never know what the weather is going to be like. I'd hate to have to run to the store the night before a snow storm to make sure we have enough food to get us through a couple days. Right now, the cabinets and freezer are packed!

KMart - Super Double Coupons I went to KMart at the beginning of the week to get some items that we will use (candy for neighbors/teachers and bags for the kids' Christmas parties). I didn't go to grab up anything and everything I could get for free. Total OOP: $20.39 -- saved 75% -- received 6 - $1 off my next shopping trip coupons from the Endust

Kroger
They had a lot of the meat on sale this week. Since we still have a lot of our pork left, I picked up chicken (5 pkgs of chicken breasts and a pack of chicken legs) and beef (roast, 2 pkgs of 2-lb ground beef) which was $28.22 of my total out of pocket. This caused my total savings to be low this month.

Total OOP: $90.72 -- saved 38%

Meijer
This wasn't that good of a trip either. I was completely out of cereal. I'm not much of breakfast eater but I did do better on my diet the weeks that I ate breakfast. Since cereal is about all I eat, I picked up two boxes to get me through the month. They weren't on sale though. I also picked my son up a new Carhartt shirt since they were clearanced.
Total OOP: $38.66 - - saved 63%.

CVS
There wasn't anything that I needed at CVS this week until I saw Carri @ Money Saving Methods post about the American Express gift cards. I needed 3 gift cards so I headed to CVS. Why not make money off them?!?! Plus, the young one wanted a power toothbrush (I picked it up for his stocking).
Total OOP: $88.98 -- received $11 in ECB, $15 rebate for gas card

Radio Shack
I don't normally go into Radio Shack but I was looking for a Caterpillar Construction Wireless R/C vehicle. They didn't have them but I did find a new cover for my iPod that was clearanced.
Total OOP: $1.47

Dollar Tree
This wasn't really planned but since it was close to Kroger I decided to stop in to see what they had. I was able to get my nephew the flash cards my SIL wanted for him (much cheaper than I had seen them at other stores for), 4 gift card holders (3 for the gift cards I bought at CVS) and The Alli Diet Plan book. I'm not using Alli but I saw a few good recipes in it as I was flipping through it at the store.
Total OOP: $4.28

My Shopping Trips - Week of 11/16/2008

No big grocery trip for me this week. I did make a run to Meijer at the start of the week for some more steamers and salad dressing (or health kick we started). I picked up a few other things while I was there. I made a stop at Walgreens and CVS as well.

I was so proud of my fiance on Sunday. He had bought some Champion Men's Sweatshirts on Saturday at regular price $16.99. They went on sale for $12.99 on Sunday. I told him to stop by the service desk with his receipt and get the difference back. He looked at me funny. He's not one to do that kind of thing. (Yes Houston, we have a problem but I'm working on it.) When he got home, I asked him about it. He said he got $21.xx back and even used coupons to pick up some soup. I was SOOOOO proud! He was shocked at the amount of money he got back - almost enough to buy 2 more sweatshirts! So, be sure to keep your receipts and watch for the item to go on sale the following week or 2 weeks for some stores.

Meijer
We really didn't need the toilet paper but for $2.14 for a 6 mega roll package (on sale for $3.14 used $1.00 Meijer Mealbox coupon) - it wasn't a bad deal. We already had a pretty big stockpile from a few weeks back. Total OOP: $14.41 - - saved 71% plus I'll get $2.98 back on the Try Me Hillshire Farms Hearty Slices rebate.

CVS
I did the battery deal once for myself and twice for my mother. She used to be a coupon clipper but hasn't done it since I was a youngin'. She didn't coupon anywhere near the way I do. She was really impressed that she could get all the batteries in the second pictures for $7.04.

Transaction 1:
I had 2 - $.75 cent coupons for the Skippy and 3 - $.75 cent coupons for the batteries.
Total OOP: $6.72 -- received $15 ECB

Transaction 2 & 3:
These transactions were done back to back. I used the ECBs from transaction 1 into transaction 2 with 3 - $.75 coupons. One of the packages had a $.50 coupon on it and the cashier took that off too. Then I rolled the ECB from transaction 2 into transaction 3 with 3 - $.75 coupons.
Total OOP: $7.04 -- received $15 ECB for each transaction

Walgreens
Transaction 1:
We are hosting a Thanksgiving dinner at our house the day after Thanksgiving so I picked a few 2-liters. I used a $.60 and $.40 coupon on the Skippy. Yes - more peanut butter (my son takes it for lunch everyday). I had a coupon for the 2-liters that I got from CVS - Buy 4 save $1...I used the Walgreens in-ad coupon to get one free when I bought 4. The string cheese was for the kiddo - it was cheaper than what he really wanted! =)
Total OOP: $8.44

Transaction 2:
I read over at Coupon Cravings about a deal on the Hershey's Special Dark but it didn't work for me. I tried! I handed the lady my manufacturer's coupons first and she pulled out her ad to scan the in-ad candy bar coupon. I was still able to get 6 candy bars for $1.17.Total OOP: $5.95 -- I'll get $2.20 Easy Saver rebate back on the Scotch tape (10% bonus for putting in on my Walgreens gift card).

This week's totals:
Total before coupons/sales: $146.48
Total OOP (minus mom's batteries - she paid me for them): $35.52
Rebate amount: $5.15
Total Savings = 79%!!

You can read about Part I of my shopping trips here. I stopped by Marsh yesterday when I took my mom Christmas shopping. There really wasn't much in their ad that we needed but anytime I can get laundry detergent cheap - I'm there!

You can check out some of the other Marsh deals here. These deals are good until Wednesday, November 19th.

My Shopping Trip - Week of 11/9/08

I was late posting last week's shopping trips. You can check it out here. Last week, I did my once a month grocery shopping. It wasn't the best trip but it was better than October's. There really wasn't anything we needed this week except for eggs but I headed out for a few things anyways.

Aldi

I had heard about the Bacon Wrapped Filet from The Thrifty Mommy. Since I was headed there, I decided to pick up 2 to try. They were good...my fiance turned up his nose when I first told him where I got them.

Total OOP: $7.19

Walgreens
I picked up our free 8x10 and prints that we had made for insurance purposes, some $.49 Betty Crocker icing, free Clabber Girl Corn Starch and Baking Powder, and a baby bottle candy to keep the youngin' happy.

Total OOP: $3.54

CVS
Well, the Sunday-Monday ECB deals
were gone by the time I made it to CVS so I had to get rain checks. Works for me! I picked up a few other items plus the free Altoids (like I need anymore of these things).

Total OOP: $8.28 - - earned $4.59 in ECBs from 1st photo, no ECBs on 2nd.

Target
I had a rain check from a couple weeks back on the sweatpants so I needed to get them before my rain check expired. Then we went back to get a toy for a birthday party that my youngest son will be attending this weekend (paid $8 for it and regular price was $16.89!!).

Total OOP: $22.81

Dollar Tree
I normally don't shop the Dollar Tree but I needed a birthday card and aluminum pans (for food that we take to our Thanksgiving dinners - easy clean up!). I ended up picking up a bow for the present and an 8pk of no slip headbands.

Total OOP: $3.75

That's all my shopping for this week! Oh, I did pick up a Wii...I don't have a picture because it's not in the house (my kids are too sneaky to have it around here). That wasn't quite a savings though but with the Wii Fit maybe it will help with my weight loss...we'll see.

My Shopping Trips - Week of 11/2/008

Well, it was grocery shopping time for me again. We are really going to try to incorporate some of the meat from our pig into our menu plan to avoid having to buy too much meat from the grocery. The only problem is most of the pork that we got has bones in it. I do not eat meat that has bones. So, it leaves me to find an alternative on those nights.

Meijer
Total OOP: $33.69 - - saved 44%

Kroger

Total OOP: $82.83 - - saved 52%
*The Colgate toothpaste and toothbrushes were donated.

This wasn't the best of grocery trips for me but it was better than
last month. Last month, I spent $97.xx and only saved 39%. It's still better than this time last year. I've made some MAJOR improvements in our grocery shopping. We used to spend anywhere from $150-200 a week just on groceries. Now I spend less than that for a month of groceries!

I also stopped by Old Navy to pick up the kids, myself and my nieces some Performance Fleece hats and scarves that they had on sale for $1.

Total OOP: $9.59 - - saved 81%

Extra Upromise Savings with new eCoupons

Have you heard the word about Upromise's eCoupons? It's a great way to boost your child's college education savings. Now you must have a Upromise account to use the eCoupons. If you don't have one, you can get one here.

Once you add the loyalty card numbers (like Kroger Shopper Card) from your favorite participating stores, go here to add the eCoupons. Coupons change every month so you will want to make sure to log on every month to add the new coupons. The catch to these eCoupons is the money does not come off your receipt (aka no savings at the store) but you the money will be placed in your Upromise account.

Example: Add the $.50 Charmin Mega Roll coupon to your Kroger Shopper Card, purchase Charmin Mega Roll at Kroger, then the $.50 from purchasing the Charmin Mega Roll will show up in your Upromise account (not deducted from your receipt).
